First of all, there is no individual mandate to carry health care insurance for this year, 2013. The mandate takes effect beginning in 2014 and the penalty for not carrying healthcare insurance will be $95 per adult ($47.50 per child) or 1% of the family income, whichever is greater. The penalty rises each year. In 2016 the penalty will reach $695 per adult ($347.50 per child) or 2.5% of the family income, whichever is greater.
