J.R. HASTINGS
James R. Hastings obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law, in Sacramento, California. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in International Affairs from the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado.
In 1977 Jim was a legal assistant to the Nevada Supreme Court. In 1980 he opened his law office in San Anselmo, California.
Jim is a member of the California, Colorado, Nevada, and District of Columbia bars as well as the
Marin County Bar Association, American Bar Association, and the Lawyer Pilots Bar
Association. He is a member of the California State Bar Estate Planning, Trust
and Probate Law Section and the Marin County Estate Planning Council. He was
appointed in l99l to Team 2 of the California State Bar Estate Planning, Trust
and Probate Law Section, a committee that examined proposed California statute
changes.
Jim is an Accredited Estate Planner with the National Association of Estate Planners.
Jim is also a professional airplane pilot, having flown for the United States Air Force and United Airlines. He was a B-777 captain for United Airlines and holds the highest possible pilot ratings. Jim served in the Air Force Reserve, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His last duty was as an Individual Mobilization Augmentee to the Office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C.
Jim served on the governing bodies of the First Presbyterian Church of San Anselmo, Ross Valley Rotary, Easter Seals of Marin, and the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce, the latter of which he served as President. He coached CYO youth basketball teams (presently retired). Long ago, he served in the Municipal Court as a Temporary Judge and continues as an Arbitrator for the Superior Court.
Jim is a sponsor of the Tiburon Film Festival and the annual Airline Pilots Association Council 34 (San Francisco) Retirement Dinner.
His practice primarily consists of estate planning, probate, and trust administration, but occasionally Jim handles real estate concerns or acts as the personal lawyer of his clients. He is assisted by two secretaries and one legal assistant for probate and trust administration.
